âThe LAW OF MOSESâ
A.S.V, American Standard Version Bible!
1Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope;
The English word hope is translated from the Greek word elpis which can be translated hope or confidence. Because of verse 5 below confidence might be a better translation in that we probably transition from hope to confidence in our walk with God beginning at hope, Romans 5:3-5, James 1:1-4.
1Timothy 1:2 to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
1Timothy 1:3 As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus, in order that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
1Timothy 1:4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
1Timothy 1:5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and a sincere faith.
1Timothy 1:6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,
1Timothy 1:7 wanting to be teachers of the Law, THE LAW OF MOSES, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
Code I, the Moral Law, see the Law of Moses below, is still in force. While we are not saved by the keeping of the Moral Law but by Grace, Ephesians 2:10, but while we are in the flesh we stray from time to time and in discipline we can and do suffer from the error of bad moral choices. God is still the Moral God and is never pleased by sin, 1Corinthians 5:9-13 and 6:9-11. The loss of mortal life and loss of rewards can and have been a consequence of non repentance from bad moral lifestyles but not loss of Spiritual life, 1Corinthians 5:1-5, Hebrews 12:7-14.
Luke 16:15 And he said unto them, Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
Luke 16:16 The law, the Law of Moses, and the prophets were until John, John the Baptist,: from that time the gospel of the kingdom of God is preached, and every man entereth violently into it, it is not by force but by Grace, see also: Matthew 11:11-15 .
Luke 16:17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tittle, accent mark, of the law to fall.
The Law of Moses!
The Law of Moses here is divided into three parts, or codes, as follows:
Code I, The Commandments, Exodus 20:1-17, contains the laws of divine institution and establishment, including the moral law (the 10 commandments). This is the Magna Carta or Bill of Rights of human freedom.
Code II, The Ordinances, or the spiritual code, included a complete Christology (doctrine of Christ), and was designed to present Christ as the only Saviour. Included in the ordinances is a “shadow” Christology and a ‘shadow’ Soteriology (doctrine of salvation). These ideas are presented in the descriptions of the Tabernacle, the Holy Days, the Levitical Offerings, and the daily activity of the priesthood.
Because Christ has come we have the reality and not the shadow so we use this portion of the Law of Moses to demonstrate the fore knowledge and planning of God.
Code III, The Judgments, was the social code – the divine laws of establishment applied to social living. Questions of diet, sanitation, quarantine, soil conservation, taxation, military service, how to spend a honeymoon, what to do about divorce, slavery, inheritances, etc., were all covered. It was a complete set of laws.
Portions of the Law of Moses , in red above , were transferred to the New Testament and they are specified, named there for us.
1Timothy 1:8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
1Timothy 1:9 realizing the fact that law, the following context shows this to be the Moral Law, the 10 commandments, is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
1Timothy 1:10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, these are Un-repentant sinners ,
1Timothy 1:11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
1Timothy 1:12 I,The Apostle Paul, thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service;
1Timothy 1:13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. And yet I was shown mercy, because I acted ignorantly in unbelief, Luke 23:33-34;
1Timothy 1:14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.
1Timothy 1:15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all, Luke 5:31-32.
1Timothy 1:16 And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
1Timothy 1:17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
1Timothy 1:18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may fight the good fight,
1Timothy 1:19 keeping faith, verse 6, and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
1Timothy 1:20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered over to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme, 1Peter 4:17-19.
These men are not being discarded but have self qualified for extra instruction.
We are all learning through experience and observation the double dealing of Satan which is good for our learning but we are still held by the hand of God , John 10:27-30. While Adam and Eve were made righteous in a righteous environment and subsequently made an Evil choice all of us were born into an Evil world and have an option to choose Righteousness or remain as we are which is the choice of many.
James 3:1 Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier, stricter judgment.
James 3:2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, what he says the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
If we were perfect when we were born of God why would God be conforming us to the Image of His Son Jesus Christ, Romans 8:29? But, God is taking the imperfect and making us perfect.
