Moral Living by

The 10 Commandments

Romans 2:28-29

Romans 11:17-20

                                  Loving God, 1John 5:3!

Exodus 20:1 Then God spoke all these words, saying,
Exodus 20:2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me, 1John 5:21.

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

Exodus 20:5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,

Exodus 20:6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

Exodus 20:8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Exodus 20:9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

Exodus 20:10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the LORD made (not create) the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

                          Loving our Neighbor, 1John 5:2!

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.

Exodus 20:14 “You shall not commit adultery.

Exodus 20:15 “You shall not steal.

Exodus 20:16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Exodus 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Matthew 22:35 And one of them, a lawyer, questioned Him, Jesus, testing Him, and saying,

Matthew 22:36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?

Matthew 22:37 And Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind”, DEUTERONOMY 6:5.

Matthew 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Matthew 22:39 And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself “, LEVITICUS 19:18.

Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments all the Law and the Prophets hang.

Hang here would be like a vertical block diagram or a flow chart and in this case would have 2 major headings.

Love the Lord your God—Love thy neighbor as Thyself

The 10 commandments

The Law of Moses

The prophets

God’s Eternal purpose!

Sin and righteousness are measured by God’s yard stick which is the 10 commandments which are an expanded form’s of the two great commandments which are loving God and loving your neighbor and are further expanded in Exodus 20, see above and other places giving more detail, Matthew 22:35-40.

These examples are merely examples as you will notice when reading the New Testament as they are quoted in many places.

The first 4 commandments concern our commitment to God. The last 6 commandments list our dealing toward each other and mankind, EXODUS 20:3, 20:12-17.

When Jesus died at Calvary he did not free us from the 10 commandments but rather He freed us from the penalty of breaking the 10 commandments which is the “Lake of Fire”. Freeing us comes from God’s Grace by means of the vicarious, substitute death of Jesus Christ.

Being born of the Spirit is the beginning and not the end. God expects us to Grow in respect of salvation by divorcing the deeds of the flesh and to move toward righteous living and perseverance which is where rewards are such as “the Crown of Life”, James 1:12, Revelation 2:10.

Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.

This is sowing and reaping meaning rewards or loss of rewards in the short term and Eternity.

Rewards here are spiritual and material. The suffering and right living we do now has temporary and Eternal consequences meaning “walk with the Lord”.

Do not move into a cave but keep laboring for a living and do not covet but rather share but do not reduce your self to poverty, 1Corinthians 13:3!

Galatians 6:8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

Galatians 6:9 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary, 1John 1:9.

Galatians 6:10 So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

1Timothy 1:5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith, 1Corinthians 13:1-8.

1Timothy 1:6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,

Fruitless discussion means they are not producing the fruit of the Spirit of God because they are exercising human viewpoint and not Bible teaching, Galatians 5:22.

1Timothy 1:7 wanting to be teachers of the Law of Moses even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

1Timothy 1:8 But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it

lawfully,

One uses it lawfully means only portions of the Law of Moses have been moved forward to the new testament meaning the ten commandments, Messiah has come, animal sacrifice is voided and the priest hood has changed as well as other things.

1Timothy 1:9

1Timothy 1:9 realizing the fact that the moral law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers

1Timothy 1:10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,

1Timothy 1:11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I, THE APOSTLE PAUL have been entrusted.

1Timothy 1:12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service,

1Timothy 1:13!

1Timothy 1:13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief, LUKE 23:34;

1Timothy 1:14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.

1Timothy 1:15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.

1Timothy 1:16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

1Timothy 1:17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

1Corinthians 5:11!

1Corinthians 5:11 But now I am writing to you to stop associating with any so-called brother if he is  sexually immoralgreedy, an  idolater, a  slanderer, a drunk, or a  robber. With such a person you must even stop eating.

This person is being dis-fellowshipped and turned over to Satan for the most severe discipline ending in death and based on requirements from the 10 commandments for immoral living but he was restored after his repentance.

He never was in jeopardy regarding loss of salvation but was headed down the road of premature death and loss of rewards.

Five of the 10 commandments, the Moral Law are mentioned here in 1Corinthians 5:11 above.

Hebrews 4:10!

Hebrews 4:10 For the one who has entered His, God’s rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

God’s rest To us is the sabbath by means of Jesus Christ commandment meaning we rest in Him.

His works is the works required under the “Law of Moses” meaning animal sacrifice for sins committed meaning we are saved by the one time sacrifice of Jesus Christ and use 1John 1:8-10 to confess our sins to God in prayer because God is just and justified to forgive our CURRENT AND PAST sins through Jesus Christ.

As here means in a similar manner meaning God rested from His work of 6 days meaning His work was completed.

Our sabbath rest is in Jesus and we are resting from certain works of the Law of Moses such as animal sacrifice with our sin’s paid for through Jesus and confession of sins comitted, 1John 1:9.

The law of Moses required stoning for certain offences but the new covenant offers us restoration through repentance and 1John 1:9 even so there is a sin leading to physical death.

Ephesians 5:5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

Ephesians 6:2!

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Ephesians 6:2 #5 Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

Ephesians 6:3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Luke 24:44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

Luke 24:45 Then He opened up their mind to understand the Scriptures,

Luke 24:46 and said to them, So it is written, and so the Christ must suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.

Luke 24:47 And repentance and remission of sins must be preached in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

The Name of Jesus Christ is about who He was and what He did in His ministry of reconciliation meaning we pray in respect of His successful ministry using the name of Jesus Christ in the header of our request, praying to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ.

1Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,

1Corinthians 6:10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

1Corinthians 6:11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, EPHESIANS 5:26, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.

All things are lawful but not profitable simply means that once and for all time we have been saved from the penalty of sin which is “The Lake of Fire” but not profitable is referring to the BEMA, the judgment seat of Christ where all Christians will receive a reward based on the life we live in the flesh after being regenerated by the Spirit of God.

1John 1:8-10 will erase the sinful deeds that we do in the flesh from time to time through the Grace plan of God and will restore us to fellowship with God who will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Cleanse here can be as soft as shampoo or as difficult as cleansing with scouring powder and steel wool with us repenting or resisting.

Not all suffering is for discipline but some, perhaps much is for the benefit of others as Jesus did and then the Apostles as well as us.

When people observe the problems we endure and still cling to Jesus and our faith they are awed and it can be life changing for them as actions speak louder than words,1Peter 2:12, 3:1-4.

We are saved because our will from the flesh submitted to God’s will through our repentance.

Living a perfect life is not possible for us but practice makes perfect and that is moving in the right direction.

Keeping the 10 commandments to perfection is simply not possible because our flesh which is controlled by lust puts tremendous pressure on us.

At our death the sinful flesh and control by the flesh will not be possible as we will be OUT OF THE BODY and in the spirit and in God’s heaven awaiting our new spiritual body but with a regenerated spirit and a rebuilt Soul from Bible teaching by the Holy Spirit leading us and teaching Jesus Christ and works of God the Father in righteousness.

Pleasing the flesh will bring discipline from God with some discipline being quite severe.

The purpose of discipline is to move us closer to God and is not punishment but is a Grace provision, Hebrews 12:4-6.

Discipline!

Hebrews 12:7 If, since you endure discipline, God is dealing with you as with sons; for who is the son whom a father does not discipline?

Hebrews 12:8 But if you are without discipline, of which all believer’s have become sharers, then you are bastards, and not sons.

Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore, indeed we have had fathers of our flesh as correctors, and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits, and we shall live?

Live here is life in the flesh and some sins will lead to physical death if not repented of, 1Corinthians chapter 5, 1John 5 17-21.

Hebrews 12:10 For they truly disciplined us for a few days according to the thing seeming good to them; but He God for our profit, in order for us to partake of His holiness.

Hebrews 12:11 And all discipline for the present indeed does not seem to be joyous, but grievous; but afterward it gives back peaceable fruit Ephesians 5:22, of righteousness to the ones having been exercised by it.

Repentance!

Hebrews 12:12 Because of this, “straighten the hands” hanging alongside, “and the enfeebled knees;”

Hebrews 12:13 “and make straight tracks for your feet,” that the lame not be turned aside, but rather healed. PROVERBS 4:20-27

Hebrews 12:14 Eagerly pursue peace and holiness with all, without which no one will see the Lord,

Hebrews 12:15 watching diligently that not any lack from the grace of God, that “no root of bitterness growing up” may crowd “in on you”, and through this many be defiled.

Exodus 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep, regard my commandments, 1John 5:2-3.

Exodus 20:18 All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.

Exodus 20:19 Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die.”

Exodus 20:20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

1John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you sin not. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

1John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

1John 2:3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep, regard in high esteem His commandments, striving to keep them.

1Corinthians 6:13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

1John 5:1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.

1John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.

1John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

1Corinthians 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.

1Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,

1Corinthians 2:13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

1Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man, unregenerated person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

Spirtually appraised means you “must be born again” as unregenerated people do not have the ability to comprehend Spiritual truth and many things are hard to understand even for us as we must build “Line upon Line and precept upon precept, a little here and there a little.

In our understanding of Spiritual Truth we grow by learning “line upon line and precept upon precept which moves us from Spiritual infancy to Spiritual maturity.

New Believers!

1Peter 2:1 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander,
